Riz Khan - Israel-Iran tensions - 09 Sep 08 - Part 2 - Hot Latest News

...The United States has reached an impasse in trying to stop Iran from proceeding with its nuclear programme. That programme could fuel either peaceful nuclear reactors or nuclear bombs, although Iran insists that its nuclear programme is civilian and peaceful. Washington is coming under intense Israeli pressure to do more against Iran. Israeli officials repeat the mantra, "Israel will not allow a second Holocaust" in the context of Iran acquiring the atomic bomb. Speculation has been mounting for years that Israel might try to attack Iran's nuclear programme. But experts say it is not as simple as the Israeli attack of 1981, which destroyed an Iraqi nuclear reactor, or the Israeli attack of 2007, allegedly against the beginnings of a Syrian nuclear reactor. Join the debate Send us your views and questions On Tuesday, Riz speaks with an Israeli journalist who argues that the US, and the world community, must react more strongly to Iran. Ronen Bergman is the author of The Secret War with Iran: The 30-Year Clandestine Struggle Against the World's Most Dangerous Terrorist Power. Also joining the show is Hillary Mann Leverett, who left the Bush administration in 2004. She's a former National Security Council director for Iran and the Persian Gulf Affairs, and has criticised Washington's "major strategic blunders" in its relations with Iran. - Hot Latest News - Watch more on fastlatestnews.com...

How Is Uranium Mining Conducted in the United States?

...Uranium Resources' Mark Pelizza explains how uranium is mined--either through a conventional or in situ uranium mining process--to provide fuel for US nuclear energy facilities. He also discusses where the uranium comes from that is used to power US nuclear plants. For more information on uranium mining, see NEI's website: www.nei.org...

Extend Tax Incentive for Wind Energy

...Senator Chuck Grassley said tax relief has proven successful in developing wind energy, and it ought to be continued with the degree of certainty needed for continued investment and job creation. Grassley authored the legislation that established a tax credit for wind energy in 1992, as a way to provide a level playing field for this renewable resource against coal-fired and nuclear energy, and to help grow an innovative energy industry. Today, the wind industry supports 75000 American jobs and drives as much as $20 billion in private investment. During the last five years, 35 percent of all new electric generation in the United States was wind. There are nearly 400 wind-related manufacturing facilities in the United States today, compared with just 30 in 2004. In Iowa, the wind energy industry employs 5000 full-time workers, and there are major wind manufacturing facilities in Newton, West Branch, Cedar Rapids and Fort Madison. Iowa generates 20 percent of its electricity needs from wind....

What is polonium-210 and how can it kill

...Click Here For A Laugh www.youtube.com Polonium first hit the headlines when it was used to kill KGB agent-turned-Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006. This week, Yasser Arafat's widow has called for the late Palestinian leader's body to be exhumed after scientists in Switzerland found elevated traces of radioactive polonium-210 on clothing he allegedly wore before his death in 2004. What is polonium and how dangerous can it be? WHAT IS POLONIUM? Polonium-210 is one of the world's rarest elements, discovered in 1898 by scientists Marie and Pierre Curie and named in honor of her country of origin, Poland. It occurs naturally in very low concentrations in the Earth's crust and also is produced artificially in nuclear reactors. In small amounts, it has legitimate industrial uses, mainly in devices to eliminate static electricity. IS IT DANGEROUS? Very. If ingested, it is lethal in extremely small doses. Less than 1 gram (0.04 ounces) of the silver powder is sufficient to kill. A 2007 study by radiation experts from Britain's Health Protection Agency concluded that once polonium-210 is deposited in the bloodstream, its potent effects are nearly impossible to stop. A poisoning victim would experience multiple organ failure as alpha radiation particles bombard the liver, kidneys and bone marrow from within. The symptoms shown by Litvinenko — nausea, hair loss, throat swelling and pallor — are also typical. WHO CAN GET THEIR HANDS ON IT? The good news — not too ......
